The lead boat is fully insured and in Australian Maritime Safety Authority Commercial Survey. It has been custom built for fishing smooth and partially smooth waters. Fishing from the 5.6m Bluefin Barracuda, which is powered by a Suzuki 140hp outboard motor and Minn Kota 80lb Ulterra electric motor, ensures time on the water is relaxing and comfortable. This boat is used for tube rides during school camp programs and fishing weekends. The boat is also available for charter during the school holidays at Mooloolaba. During school camps at Moogerah Dam, students will target Australian bass and golden perch. In addition to the 5.6m Bluefin Barracuda, another 14 x 3.8m Bluefin Varmint’s are available for use, all in certificate of operation with AMSA and all powered by Minn Kota 55lb electric motors. This number of boats enables Sports Tuition to host schools with large cohorts and it ensures every student has the opportunity to participate in the fishing component.
If the school camp program is based at Alex Park, and fishing is being conducted on the Maroochy River, Mercury 6hp outboard motors are placed on the boats. There is also an option to fish off the bank at Cotton Tree using rods and reels supplied by Sports Tuition. In addition to these two options, after Term 3, 2025, schools will have the opportunity to fish Alex Park's onsite lake to target silver perch and Australian bass.
The fishing and boating program is Sports Tuition's unique camp offering. Get your school involved in the program. I know the Sports Tuition team never tire of seeing and hearing the excitement of students catching fish and quite often it is their first ever fish. It doesn't get much better than that on school camp! Students definitely love the independence of driving their own boat too.
Fishing Only Camps - Suitable for Years 10-12. Students are involved in workshops and learn knots & rigs, bait gathering and fish filleting skills. They learn how to target fish species using a variety of methods, including; live bait, diving lures, jigging and surface poppers. Key times of the day are utilised to match the method being employed. The objective is to have students gain real-life skills and to be responsible and independent on the water.
Weekend Programs - Schools can choose to promote an exclusive fishing weekend event for their school. There are many positive flow-on effects of these programs for the school community. Fishing weekend packages may consist entirely of fishing time on the water or a combination of fishing and adventure activities, such as giant swing, canoeing, milk crate climb and archery game play. These weekend packages are fully catered. For a weekend group, a minimum of 30 participants is required, with a maximum of 112. All weekends follow a similar format. The group fish in boats and target Australian bass and Golden perch. Live shrimp is used as bait. Enough fish is kept for dinner only. The adult participants learn the art of fish filleting and the children in the group have the job of bread crumbing all the fillets. The group sits down for a meal of fresh fish & chips! Dessert is toasting marshmallows by the fire.
